Blocs have reached preliminary agreement on elections law
Sulaimaniyah, 5 November (AKnews) – The parliamentary blocs have reached a preliminary agreement regarding the electoral law, reports an MP.
The parliamentary blocs have reached preliminary agreement to hold elections adopting the 2009 voter registry, says Tania Tal’at, MP on the Kurdistan Alliance list.
“We will soon reach an agreement,” mentions Tal’at.
According to the preliminary agreements, a committee will be formed to look into the 2009 voter registry.
Any province having a 15% inaccuracy in its voter registry, will have to re-vote, adds Tal’at.
While the main lingering issue lingering the elections law is the compensatory seats proposed by the UN for Arabs and Turkmans of the province, according to Tal’at.
Kirkuk is a disputed oil-rich city, just on the border of Kurdistan Region. It's a mixed city of Kurds, Arabs, Christians and Turkmans and lies 250 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
The Iraqi parliamentary elections will take place on 16 January 2010.
