Wednesday in Diyarbekir. Diyarbekir mayor, Osman Baydemir, in self-defense said that “when the
statement was issued, The prosecutor general is seeking a 3 years jail sentence for each of
the 45 mayors with charges of “praising crime”. Souri Amad mayor, Abdullah Demirbas, told AKnews that the statement
should be accepted within the framework of freedom of thoughts, noting that
“the statement was aimed at normalizing the situation. It should not be taken
for a crime.” In the midst of the trial, the judge decided to postpone the trial due
to electricity outage, however, the date of the next trial was not defined. On 4 March 2007, 45 mayors, including Diyarbekir mayor Osman Baydemir,
issued a joint statement in which they speculated about the idea of the “poisoning”
of former PKK leader, Abdullah Ocalan, and had referred to the PKK as “Kurdish
opposition”. Following the statement, the republican prosecutor general in Diyarbekir
court filed lawsuit against them with charges of “praising crime” ry AKnews
