ERBIL, July 26 (AKnews) – The UN Security Council extended the mandate
of the UN assistance mission for Iraq (UNAMI) by one more year
yesterday.
The mandate was established by the 2003 UN
Security Council resolution 1,500 at the request of Iraq’s government,
reported IANS/RIA Novosti.
The mandate's aim is to advise and
assist the government and people of Iraq on a number of fronts,
including political dialogue and national reconciliation, the electoral
process and the protection of human rights and judicial and legal
reform.
According to IANS/RIA Novosti the security challenges
in Iraq “still exist and improvements need to be sustained through
meaningful political dialogue and national unity”.
