ERBIL, July 23 (AKnews) – Iraqi Kurds are training Syrian Kurds militarily so that they can go back to Syria and defend their towns against the Syrian regime, Kurdistan Region’s President Massoud Barzani has said.

Barzani has confirmed to Al Jazeera for the first time the presence of a military training camp for Syrian refugees in Kurdistan Region. The statement comes as the Free Syrian Army and the opposition forces claim more gains against the Bashar al-Asad regime every day.

Barzani has said in the interview with Al Jazeera that “A good number of the young Kurds who fled have been trained. We do not want to interfere directly in the situation but they have been trained,”

The trained Syrian Kurds have not been sent back home yet, according to the interview, but will be deployed to Syria as Syrian forces retreat “fill any security vacuum"

The trained Kurdish Syrian will take orders from a committee that brings together two major Kurdish opposition forces in Syria, according to Barzani.

“They have not been sent to Syria. They are still here - if this high committee requires them to go they still could - if not they will wait for the situation to be sorted out because these people are from these areas and they will go back eventually… This was aimed at filling the vacuum that will be created.” Barzani has told Al Jazeera.
