Kurdish coalition rejects dismissal of Iraq’s parliament speaker
24/06/2012 13:57BAGHDAD, June 24 (AKnews) - The Kurdish Blocs Coalition (KBC) rejects efforts to dismiss Iraq’s parliament speaker Osama al-Nujaifi, adding that the call to sack Nujaifi came in response to his support for the withdrawal of confidence from Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.
The State of Law Coalition (SLC) led by Maliki yesterday revealed about requesting the presidency of the Council of Representatives to hold an extraordinary session to discuss what it called "constitutional violations" by Nujaifi. The SLC said it submitted a request signed by 25 MPs.
KBC spokesman Muayyid Tayyeb said: “They [the SLC] will not be able to collect 164 votes to dismiss Nujaifi."
The SLC revealed last week about its quest to collect signatures to dismiss Nujaifi from office, accusing him of being bias and unprofessional in the management of the council’s meetings.
Nujaifi is a senior leader in Iraqiya led by former Prime Minister Ayad Allawi. Nujaifi has been part of efforts over the past months to withdraw confidence from PM Maliki.
