Friday, July 30th 2010 12:33 PM
Nineveh, July 30 (AKnews) - A source in the Iraqi police said on Thursday evening that a bomb targeting an Iraqi army patrol west of Mosul killed one of the soldiers and wounding three others.
"The explosive device was planted on the roadside and exploded when the Iraqi army patrol passed by ... in the Baaj district west of Mosul", the source reported.
The source didn't give any other details about the incident saying only that, "The injured were taken to a nearby hospital, while the dead soldier's body was moved to a forensic laboratory."
Nineveh operations announced on June 20 that the number of violent incidents in the province had fallen by almost half in 2009 compared to 2008 figures.
According to Nineveh operation's figures, the province recorded more than 4,000 incidents in 2008, dropping to just 2,400 in 2009. The tally decreased further in the first half of this year, to only 400.
The multi ethnic city of Mosul, 405 km north of Baghdad, is the capital of Nineveh province and has been the scene of armed conflict since the fall of the former regime in 2003.
Despite several attempts to tighten security in the city, it remains unstable particularly in the wake of the withdrawal of U.S. troops at the end of last June.
