10 Turkish soldiers killed in PKK attack

ERBIL, Sep. 18 (AKnews) – At least 10 Turkish soldiers were killed 61 others were injured when Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) rebels attacked a military convoy in southeast Turkey on Tuesday, Turkish media reported.

The Turkish military convoy was traveling between the provinces of Bingöl and Muş when it was attacked by PKK rebels armed with rocket launchers and machine guns near the village of Kardeşler.

Bingöl Governor Hakan Güvençer said the convoy was made up of three buses, one midibus, one minibus and 10 armored vehicles and was carrying 200 unarmed soldiers to their military units.

Some of the injured are in critical condition.

 “Thirty-four of the injured were rushed to the Bingöl State Hospital and the remaining injured were taken to the Solhan and Muş state hospitals,” Bingol Güvençer told repreoted following the attack.

Turkish military sent reinforcements to the area and launched wide-ranging oerations in the region to chase the PKK rebels who carry out hit-and-run attacks and disappear in the mountainous territories.

The attack was a second deadly one in Bingol in three days. On Sunday a roadside bomb placed by PKK rebels for Turkish security forces killed eight Turkish policemen and injured seven others.

PKK has been fighting the Turkish state since 1984 for a Kurdish homeland in southeast Turkey. The group fought for an independent state since 1999 when its leader was detained. Now the group s fighting for an autonomous Kurdish region within Turkey.

The fighting between the PKK and Turkish military has claimed the lives of some 45,000 people.
