BAGHDAD, July 29 (AKnews) - The oil and energy committee in the Iraqi Council of Representatives revealed Sunday about the approval of the legal committee and the legal adviser of the council to question Minister of Electricity Karim Aftan, who belongs to Iraqiya List, after the request submitted by the oil committee after collecting about 70 signatures.
Aftan held the Ministry of Electricity post after resigned minister Raad Shallal, who revealed during his chairmanship of the ministry about the largest corruption file in electricity contracts of $1.7bn.
Committee member Uday Awwad said: "The legal committee and the legal adviser of the Council of Representatives approved the questioning of Minister of Electricity Karim Aftan and submitted the request to the presidency of the council.
"The presidency committee of the Council of Representatives and at its next meeting will set a date to send the request to the Council of Ministers. The presidency does not have the authority to reject or modify the request for interrogation."
The oil and energy committee earlier revealed about attaching 30 legal violations with the application submitted to the presidency of the Council of Representatives to set a date for questioning Minister of Electricity.
Iraq has suffered from a severe shortage of electric power and the national network is still unable to provide electricity for more than a few hours per day.
