ERBIL, July 1 (AKnews) - The Iraqi Electricity Ministry said today that energy production will reach 9,000 megawatts this month.
Minister of Electricity Karim Aftan al-Jumaili said in a statement during the 12th meeting of the supreme coordinating body of the provinces under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki: "The production of electric power will reach 9,000 megawatts while it currently reaches 7,750 megawatts."
Oil Minister Abdul Karim Luaibi assured during the ministerial meeting that: "The ministry will provide fuel for the owners of generators on time."
Iraq needs to at least 15,000 megawatts to meet the high demand for energy. Iraqis depend on generators to address the continuing shortage that reaches up to about 18 hours a day.
Iraq suffers from a severe shortage of electricity, especially in summer when the temperature exceeds 50 degrees Celsius.
