BAGHDAD, June 30 (AKnews) - Iraq’s electoral commission revealed today that the operations department sent a letter to Salahaddin province to provide the commission with new forms about the province’s demand to be turned into an autonomous region.
Chairman of the board of commissioners Faraj al-Haidari said: "The forms adopted by the brothers in Salahaddin province about the request to proclaim the province an autonomous region are not official and do not match the existing system in the commission.
"According to my knowledge, the operations department sent a letter to Salahaddin about the possibility of providing new forms to the commission."
The constitution allows proclaiming the province an autonomous region after the consent of one third of the provincial council members or a request of 10 percent of the voters before holding a referendum.
Maliki condemned earlier the establishment of Salahaddin region (175km northwest of Baghdad), saying that it would “never see the light of day”.
