40% of Iraqi airspace unsecure and risks exploitation for Iran attack
21/02/2012 14:21BAGHDAD, Feb. 21 (AKnews) - Only 60 percent of Iraq's airspace is monitored with radar equipment meaning the country's security measures risk being exploited by countries wishing to target Iran.
Member of the Security and Defense Committee in the Iraqi Council of Representatives Hakim al-Zamili said: "Some countries may take benefit from the unsecure areas to allow the entrance of aircraft from Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Israel or Turkey to enter Iraqi territory and strike Iran... This is possible because the United States knows ways to block the Iraqi radar because the US founded it."
Western newspapers have pointed towards a possible Israeli military strike against Iran in the near future.
Iraq has agreed in principle with Russia, Turkey, France and Italy to develop its air defenses following the withdrawal of US troops in December last year. Iraq needs radar and communications equipment and ground resources for missiles and fighter planes to repel any possible external threats.
