Babil bomb attack attempt on Shiite cleric’s representative thwarted
20/02/2012 14:02BABIL, Feb. 20 (AKnews) - A homemade bomb attack on Ayad Shareef, the representative of the Shiite cleric Ali al-Sistani, in Babil on Sunday was foiled by security forces.
A security source in Babail said: “Insurgents had placed an improved explosive device in front of the house of Sistani’s representative in Babil, Ayad Shareef… but the security forces managed to defuse it."
He said the locally-made bomb consisted of a gallon of gas with a hand grenade attached to it.
An investigation into the incident has now been launched.
Babil province is 100km south of Baghdad.
