SULAIMANIYA, Feb.17 (AKnews)- Two journalists were arrested while trying to cover the heavy military deployment in Sulaimaniya today.
In anticipation of any unauthorized protests today a considerable number of security personnel in uniform and civilian clothing have been positioned in and around the centers suspected of attacking protesters.
Abdul-Rahman Abubakir, the correspondent for an opposition party TV, KNN, said Rahman Gharib of Metro Center for Defending Journalists and him were arrested when trying to film police deployment.
"A great number of security forces surrounded and arrested us," Abubakir said "Afterwards they released me but not Gharib."
Mariwan Hassan of NRT said the forces have scattered in the market place and do not allow filming the situation.
Today coincides with the first anniversary of outbreak of reform-demanding public protests in Kurdistan. 11 people were killed and hundreds were wounded in clashes between security and protesters in Sulaimaniya province Feb.17-April 18 last year.
