Turkish soldier and four PKK rebels killed in Turkey clash

HAKKARI, Feb. 9 (AKnews) – One Turkish soldier and four Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) rebels were killed overnight in clashes between the two sides in Hakkari province, southeast Turkey, reported Turkish media.

pkkAccording to reports the clash broke out after a group of PKK fighters attacked a Turkish military base in Hakkari’s Cukurca town where PKK guerrillas killed 26 soldiers last year.

Turkish military responded to the attack with support from warplanes and helicopters. The clash reportedly left six other Turkish soldiers wounded.

PKK is a Kurdish armed group that has been fighting for the rights of the Kurds for nearly three decades. The fighting has claimed some 40,000 lives.

PKK is considered by Turkey, the US and EU to be a terrorist organization.
