KRG minister sends condolence to world Muslims over Tantawi death

Sulaimaniyah, Mar. 10 (AKnews) – Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs sent its condolence, on behalf of the people of Kurdistan, to the Muslims of Egypt and the world Wednesday over the sudden death of the Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar.

The Ministry's spokesman Mariwan Naqshbandi announced Wednesday that KRG minister Kamil Haji Ali sends his condolence to the world and Egyptian Muslims over the sudden death of Sheikh Mohammed Sayed Tantawi after passed away in Saudi Arabia.

The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar - Sunni Islam's highest seat of learning - died of a heart attack Wednesday morning in Saudi Arabia' capital city Riyadh.

"The KRG Minister of Endowments considers the death of the scholar and world figure a major loss for the Muslims and all other religions" Naqshbandi said.

KRG ministry of endowments and religious affairs kept strong relations with the Al-Azhar Sheikh. Over the past three month, the late Imam received the KRG minister twice, Naqshbandi added.

The strong bilateral relations led to student exchange programs, according to the KRG spokesman. "Currently some Kurdish students study at Al-Azhar"

Moreover, a branch institute of Al-Azhar was opened in Kurdistan in Erbil city, the capital of Iraq's Kurdistan Region, as of late, making Iraq the third country where Al-Azhar opens an institute after Malaysia and Palestine.
