Director of Water Resources in Diyala denies collapse of Mandali dam

Diyala, Feb. 8 (AKnews) The Department of Water Resources in Diyala province has denied today the collapse of Mandali dam, noting that the rainfall brought large amounts of water from several valleys that completely filled both Mandali and Gazzaniyah dams with water.
"the news reported by some media about the collapse of Mandali dam are not true," The Director of Water Resources in Diyala Province, Basem Majid, told the Independent National News Agency of Kurdistan (AKnews).
He stressed on that "The floods did not cause any damage for the installations placed under his authority in Mandali or Gazzaniyah or Athem Dams," adding that "The floods washed away a steel bridge in Hazzam valley in Gazzaniyah and it is one of the institutions that belong to Roads and Bridges Department."
"Large quantities of water were received through the valleys of Harran, Muwaylih, Hazzam and Nafit, due to heavy rains that fell in the Iranian area that is adjacent to Mandali area in Diyala province during the past few days and led to fill Mandali and Gazzaniyah dams," indicating that "the dams are working well and they have been newly established according to designs and specifications. "
The Director of the Red Crescent Committee, Diyala branch, Hazem Sarraj had earlier said to (AKnews) that the Committee and Iraqi security forces began in the early hours of Saturday to provide relief and food to the Hazzam, Assaf, Ammar, Oil Bridge (Jiser Al Nafet) villages and the villages in Tahmaniyah area in Mandali and Gazzaniyah, because they were besieged by floods caused by heavy rains that fell on Friday night and on Saturday.
Several other local media talked about the collapse of Mandali dam because of the floods which reached heavily to the dam, because of heavy rains that fell in the bordering Iranian regions.
