Iraqi bloc calls for increasing allocation of Faw Port from supplementary budget
05/07/2012 15:15ERBIL, June 5 (AKnews) - The Iraqiya free bloc has called for increasing the allocations of Faw Port from the supplementary budget for the current year.
Spokeswoman for the bloc Aliya Nassif said in a statement: "The importance of the Faw Port increases amid Kuwait's intention to complete the Mubarak Port, which requires speed in completing the project, taking into account the technical specifications. The project must be completed on time."
The Council of Ministers approved the supplementary budget of 10.9tr IQD on Tuesday to be sent to the Council of Representatives for further approval.
Iraq presented Faw Port for investment among specialized companies in April. The port will be built south of Basra city, which is the center of the oil industry in the country.
The port is part of a long-term plan to transform Iraq into a transportation passage between the Middle East and Europe that exceeds the Suez Canal, through the re-construction of a railway from the colonial era that links the Gulf and Turkey.
The port will include berths at a length of 7,000 meters (23,000 feet) to receive container ships. The length of the berth for general cargo will be 3,500 meters.
